Should TCU, ranked fourth in the final BCS standings, have played fellow unbeaten Cincinnati or Florida, which spent 12 weeks ranked No. 1, and won handily, it could have made a case for a share of the national title in the AP poll, which isn’t contractually obligated to crown the winner of the BCS Championship Game. But instead, we have a rematch of the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl, only with a much more lucrative payday — and just like last year’s Poinsettia Bowl, it offers no tangible reward, because no matter what Boise State and TCU do in that game, it will be met with, “Yes, you went undefeated and won a BCS game, but look who you played.”

I’m reminded of the opening scene of Animal House, when Kent Dorfman and Larry Kroger knocked on the door of Omega Theta Pi during rush. After being quickly paraded around and given a glimpse of all the beautiful people, they’re summarily banished to sit on the couch with Mohammet, Jugdish, Sidney and Clayton, a motley crew deemed more on their level.

By welcoming two non-AQ teams and putting them on that proverbial couch, the BCS appears to be playing damage control and trying to avoid a trial in the court of public opinion and, whether it’s the real reason or not, further pressure from congress.

via Transit Miami… Kenneth Bereski was injured on Wednesday night after a green Mini Cooper convertible with dark side stripes intentionally hit him. Here’s how the incident occurred according to Ken:

“It started when the guy tried to use the bike lane as a right turn lane on 16th and Alton. After honking at me to move and me pointing out that it was a bike lane, when the light turned green and I didn’t immediately move he got upset. Words were exchanged, ending with him accelerating to hit me. I swerved into another lane between cars. He followed partially, just enough to hit me and send my bike flying. He then swerved back into the turn lane to run straight through a red light to escape. The actual hit and run occurred on Alton Road and 17^th street by the movie theater”

I’ve gotten into an argument with a passenger in a vehicle at the same intersection waiting for the light to change while I was in the bike lane. This story is crazy.

Front Door Design of the Day: This breathtaking marvel of modern design was custom-made for an Indian diamond merchant (natch) out of 40 individual sections of Burma teak.

Each section is carved so that the door integrates 160 pulleys, 80 ball bearings, a wire-rope and a counter weight hidden within the single pivot.

Stacked one above the other in the closed position, each plank can then rotate by a simple push causing the door to reconfigure into a sinusoidal curve.

The door was one of four Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award winners, a prize which honors “the best pieces of design by young architects from across the world.” Well deserved to say the least.

A few of these made me go, “oh,” and then feel really dumb. Such as:

NO: spitting image
YES: spit and image
The very spit of someone is an exact likeness. “The spit and image” or “spit image” emphasizes the exactness.

NO: mischevious
YES: mischievous
It would be mischievous of me not to point out the frequent misplacement of the accent and letter-switching in this word. Remember, it is accented the same as mischief and the suffix is simply -ous.

And one that always makes me twitch when I hear it:

NO: excetera, et cetra, excetra (that’s the worst and i hear it all the time)
YES: et cetera
Latin for “and” (et) “the rest” (cetera) are actually two words that still may be written separately.
And the correct abbreviation of that is “etc.” Not “ect.”
